“And God Created a Womxn of Color”

2020

Acrylic on Paper 11” x 8.5”

‘And God Created a Womxn of Color’ reflects on the discrepancy between the aesthetic qualities one often perceives as “feminine”, such as being submissive, or delicate, and the artist’s own experience of what it is to be a transgender person of color today. The piece is exploring the representation of the female form outside of the ‘male gaze’ through a symbolic abstraction process. The artist sheds light on the complexities of being a darker skinned Filipino person (Morena). Morena women are gazed upon through a marginalized lens that also renders them invisible. This oppressive system becomes the central message of this self-portrait.
