Ceramic Sculpture (doll parts, clay, plaster, acrylic and oil paint, and gold frame)
This sculpture is a reinterpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's iconic "Vitruvian Man" through the perspective of an transgender immigrant artist of color that intertwines the concepts of transgender identity and transhumanism. This sculpture serves as a profound homage to the complexities of human existence, with a poignant focus on the cleansing of trans and gender non-conforming people through colonization and imperialism.
The sculpture encapsulates an intricate journey of self-discovery and transformation. At its heart is a transgender figure of color, depicted with striking reverence. Meticulously fashioned from an array of materials that speaks to the access of resources of the artist and her community, the piece is created using a thrifted gold frame, barbie doll parts, clay, wax, plaster, acrylic paint and oil paint. By centering a trans figure of color, the sculpture invites contemplation of the intricate tapestry of identity, as well as the challenges faced by marginalized communities. By reimagining renowned artworks through the lens of trans subjects, the sculpture asserts the importance of acknowledging the diverse lived experiences within the broader narrative of humanity. It challenges the historical erasure of trans individuals and reclaims spaces for them in the canon of art.
3D Sculpture (in collaboration with Zel Downey)
With the subject being depicted in what resembles to be a stone statue, the sculpture stands as an extension of the work of the artist entitled “Adarnique”, a piece that presents a story behind the Adarna Bird, a mythical creature from the Philippines, and the two trans women, both seemingly turned into stone statues. The dichotomy of the piece explores the conversation between both the milestones made in protecting the trans community and the relentless assault on the community. The secondary arms and legs of the subject are painted to depict robotic limbs, opening up the conversation of the sculpture's central figure, transhumanism, and captivating a blend of transgender identity and futuristic technology. This sculpture stands as a powerful emblem of the evolving human experience, where the boundaries between gender identity and technological augmentation are explored, celebrated, and debated. A trans individual stands confidently at the core, radiating authenticity and resilience. However, instead of conventional limbs, the figure possesses robotic arms and legs, symbolizing the integration of technology with the fluidity of gender identity. One arm extends upward in a gesture of empowerment, while the other reaches outward, forging connections beyond the boundaries of the physical self. Encircling the central figure are intricate patterns reminiscent of gears, circuits, and interconnected networks, drawing attention to the symbiotic relationship between human and machine. These patterns serve as a reminder that technological advancements have the potential to amplify and enhance our identities, mirroring the discussions around transhumanism. As viewers engage with the sculpture, they are prompted to reflect on their beliefs, biases, and visions for the future. The artwork becomes a catalyst for discussions that traverse gender, technology, and humanity's trajectory. “Vitruvianique” stands as a beacon of exploration, reminding us that as we navigate the intersections of identity and technology, we must continue to honor the inherent dignity and uniqueness of every individual. The amalgamation of historical influences and contemporary interpretations becomes a dynamic representation of the past, present, and future.
