This sculpture was created to remind the viewer to shape their identity in a way that resonates with them. This sculpture opens up a conversation on how trans and non-binary bodies were and were not portrayed in the canon of art in order to humanize their identities, experiences and struggles.
By recontextualizing classic artworks to feature trans subjects, this sculpture sparks essential conversations about representation, identity, and inclusivity. It encourages the viewer to question existing norms and biases while honoring the richness of diversity. As viewers interact with the sculpture, they are invited to reflect on their own preconceived notions and biases. The artwork acts as a catalyst for social change, fostering a more inclusive world where every identity is cherished and celebrated.
The piece being molded inspired by the barbie doll used for “Vitruvianique.” This sculpture was created to remind transgender individuals to shape their identity in a way that resonates with them. Just as dolls can undergo changes and transformations, some transgender individuals see parallels between their own journeys of self-discovery and the concept of dolls being transformed. This sculpture opens up a conversation on how their forms were and were not portrayed in the canon of art.
This piece merges the notion of transgender individuals expressing themselves as “dolls,” while highlighting the visual representation of their unique identity through sculpture. The concept of reshaping both physical forms through sculptures and the term “dollhood” represents the personal narrative of transgender individuals opening a dialogue about their own identities and representations. By offering a perspective from the artist’s background, the sculpture enriches conversations around diversity within the art world.
