Parturition is a symbolic abstract piece depicting trans birth. Upon looking back at the artist’s existence, the observation that trans people, especially those in the early stages of questioning their gender, can have trouble putting words to their experiences is explored in the canvas of the piece. These experiences can also be difficult to understand for people who have never questioned their gender thus the message in the piece is the spirit of self-actualization. This realization resonates so strongly with many trans people – the existence of a true identity beyond the physical form, an ideal self that one can seize control of unlike many other aspects of the transgender experience such as resources, legislations, familial support and many more.

Parturition as an artistic piece of renewal grew out of the awareness of the artist’s own prejudices towards aesthetics deemed to be feminine. Having not been allowed to show inclinations to it growing up as a trans person and then realizing that this was because the aesthetic attributes which we understand to be feminine were not at all true to her lived experience. The colors, movements and structures visible in the body of work is a way of the artist addressing the disparity and ‘Parturition’ is the precursor to this statement.
